Let me introduce myself, I’m Matt H. and I’m an alcoholic. Since June 6, 2005, I haven’t had to pick up a drink or use drugs. That is a miracle. But I did not make it here on my own. It is thanks to the program of recovery found in the first 164 pages of the book Alcoholics Anonymous, the recovered members of AA that came before me, the meetings and fellowship of AA, and the help of my sponsors.
Even before I surrendered to the program of recovery, I had been introduced to meditation by my therapist but it didn’t really take. In the years since, I’d return to it when the shit hit the fan. I’d find some peace or my circumstance would calm and I’d stop. Looking back I’ve been a binge meditator. I’d put together a few days of meditation over a period of a month several times a year but nothing consistent. I’ve even written and led guided group meditations at recovery retreats. You see, I really wanted to be someone who actually had a meditation practice but not enough to actually do it. I’d usually announce my binges with some fanfare masked as humility to my family or sponsor and dive head first into it. If I remember correctly, I once made it 14 or 15 days consecutively before losing momentum and tapping out. Most binges lasted less than a week.
On Dec 23, 2019, I started meditating daily. No fanfare, no goals, no expectations. I just decided to take some action. I was tired of talking about it so I started.
I began with Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey’s 21 Day meditation challenge which I love dearly. I’ve used apps like Calm and Insight Timer. I’ve listened to some amazing music by Ashana and used my phone as a timer. Through all of this, I found very little in the way of guided meditations that spoke specifically to alcoholism and recovery. So, I created my own.
Most of what is in these meditations comes directly from the text of the Big Book and Twelve and Twelve. They can be listened to consecutively or individually based on what step you may be working in your program.
Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a beginner, I hope you enjoy these and find serenity in your program of recovery and your meditation practice.
Namaste.
Matt H.
